CTV to air the Paralympic Closings

Scene of the Paralympic Opening Ceremony, section which was not broadcasted on CTV

CTVGlobemedia, after a few angry viewers and critical newspaper articles from the Vancouver Sun [1], decided to air the Paralympic Closing Live nationally [2].  I was certainly disappointed when I heard CTV was going to air the Paralympic Opening on a Saturday, the day after the openings, especially when they claimed to have the best coverage for the Paralympic games, which only consisted in 90 minute highlights and live coverage of the Canadian sledge hockey games.

Paralympics is a compound word of the two words paraplegic and Olympics, but also “para” comes from parallel, meaning the Paralympics is parallel to the Olympic games.  I understand that the Paralympics is a much smaller event, but it is equally as important.  90 minutes highlights just doesn’t do it.  It’s great to see CTV finally deciding to broadcast the ceremonies live, but it should’ve been done in the first place.  And CTV’s “record paralympic coverage,” as claimed in the article below, doesn’t even compare to Italy’s Paralympic coverage, which their network dedicated 5 HD channels just for the event.
